Our Story

A century of compassionate service

Founded in 1915 by Dr. Charlotte Pring, Narsapur Christian Hospital has grown from a 2-bed women's ward into a full-service institution — guided always by faith, compassion, and a calling to provide affordable, advanced care.

Dr. Charlotte Pring arrived in Narsapur as a nurse and witnessed pregnant women dying at home rather than attend a male doctor. Despite a congenital hip dislocation that meant she walked with a stick all her life, she returned to England, qualified in medicine, and came back to Narsapur — starting the Ghosha Women's Hospital in 1915 with just 2 beds in a compound that was "all sand and cobras." She handed over in 1946 and passed to be with the Lord in 1953, leaving behind a legacy that has touched hundreds of thousands of lives.

1915 — Foundation
Dr. Charlotte Pring founds the Ghosha Women's Hospital. 17,000 outpatients in the first five years.
1923
Dr. Pring starts the Leprosy (Bethesda) Hospital, extending the ministry of healing in Narsapur.
1946 — Silver Jubilee
Dr. Betty D. Holt becomes Medical Superintendent. New midwifery block opened. She serves 30 years, raising the standard of Gynaecology and Obstetrics.
1965 — Golden Jubilee
School of Nursing opened by Miss Doris Yates; water tank constructed.
1974 — Men's Wing & Renamed
Dr. C.R. Prabhakar, MD MS, joins. Men's Wing established; hospital renamed Narsapur Christian Hospital. Modern surgical techniques introduced. Hospital grows to 250 beds.
1990 — Platinum Jubilee
Merillat Maternity Building renovated and reopened.
2005 — Dr. Kalyani Thomas, Director
Dr. Lily Kalyani Thomas takes over as Director, having served the hospital since 1968. Under her leadership the hospital expands services and marks its Centenary in 2015 with commendations from the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
2015 — Centenary
100 years of service celebrated on 7th February 2015.
2025 — Dr. Philip Mitta, Director
Dr. Philip Mitta takes over as Director, bringing advanced laparoscopic surgery, expanded paediatric services, ophthalmology, dialysis and intensive care — continuing the hospital's mission into its second century.

School of Nursing

Established 1967. A 3-year GNM programme training 20 students annually, affiliated to the Christian Medical Association of India. Graduates serve across Andhra Pradesh and beyond.

Internal Medicine

ICU equipped with ventilators and continuous monitoring for critically ill patients, post-surgical recovery and medical emergencies.
